Sebuah masjid bergaya khas oriental negeri Tirai Bambu China ini dibangun sebagai bentuk penghormatan pada Laksamana Cheng Ho, seorang laksamana China yang menyebarkan agama Islam melalui jalur perdagangan.
Masjid Cheng Ho Surabaya merupakan masjid pertama di Indonesia yang menggunakan nama Muslim Tionghoa dan menjadi simbol perdamaian umat beragama. Nama masjid ini berasal dari sosok penghormatan pada Cheng Ho, seorang Muslim berperawakan tinggi yang pernah berlayar dari China hingga ke pantai Afrika. Kedatangan Cheng Ho saat itu disambut baik karena ia menghormati wilayah yang ia singgahi.
Ia mempunyai beberapa misi melalui jalur perdagangan, seperti menjalin persahabatan dan menyebarkan ajaran agama Islam. Oleh karena itu, untuk mengapresiasi sosok Laksamana Cheng Ho yang membawa misi baik tersebut didirikanlah Masjid Cheng Ho.
